Curacao is a Tiny Island in front of the coast of Venezuela, and I am currently a Resident here. I lived in Curacao for around 4 years and met beautiful people and horses. It’s a great challenge to have horses on an island where nothing grows, and it’s really hot. When I first came to Curacao to ride with Enthomar Francisco (See Bonaire Blog) I decided to move to Curacao and work at the Riding School in Jongbloed. After that I started teaching people around the Island. I sometimes went along with Enthomar when he trained horses for Paso Fino competitions and I enjoyed the ambiance of the Paso Fino Feria’s.

Curacao stole my heart with her colored houses and culture. People dancing in the streets on Bachata and Salsa, and their beautiful people.

Plantage Juan Luis

While exploring the island, I meet Savine and her horses. We connected immediately on the same level and become very good friends. Savine is the founder of Plantage Juan Luis. On this Ranch she keeps the horses as natural as she can. They have a lot of space to move. She trains mostly bitless and barefoot and she connects people with horses and shows them how it can be done different. Savine has made incredible trails around St Joris, which leads you past the rocky coasts, over the dragstrip and into the bay where you can swim with your horse.

Rancho Harmonia

My next overseas project was at Rancho Harmonia Curacao. A therapy ranch focussed on people with autism, or with a mental of physical disability. The ranch also offers agistment. My project focused on professionalising the training of the horses to improve the quality of the therapy. I met amazing people like Inge who was the founder of this foundation, Diane who is a magician with kids with autism and Xavier who is an incredible Paso Fino trainer.

I also learn a lot about coaching and therapy, in between training the horses and Diane and managing the Rancho. The rancho is a very professional environment with well educated therapists.
